INSTRUCTIONS:

INDIVIDUAL TASK// MOTION GRAPHIC
Composition (Graphics &typography) + Animation (Movement+Rhythm)
Recommended 3 motion graphics
Figure 1.1 Motion Graphics Infographic by Ahrefs 2D, 6th Jan 2022
The minimalist design makes graphic elements pop out, which grabs the viewer's attention. The information is delivered clearly with exciting illustrations, symbol representations, and minimal text. The art style is simple yet gives a friendly approach with color. The background music and sound effects make the motion graphic more fun and lively.

The composition of the elements is good, and each piece of information is well presented. A large amount of data is divided into different frames and layouts, which allow the audience to digest the information slowly. The excellent combination of text and graphical elements highlighted the key points. Simple shapes and colour choice is straightforward, which represents BAUHAUS. As our final project will be an informational video, we could take this as a reference to study the transitions and how different elements from different frames are linked together.

Figure 1.3 JOY: Eight Foods of Joy by Goldrick, 6th Jan 2022
This motion graphic is fun and experimental to turn food into numbers. This brilliant idea is to use food or other items to replace the sensitive frames (e.g., banana=penis) for our final project, which is the  Sex Education video. The illustration looks realistic with the play of shadow and color contrast. It inspired me to think out of the box to illustrate content creatively

GROUP PROJECT//SEX EDUCATION VIDEO
After group discussion, our team decided to go for the Family planning topic. We break the script into different parts to write down the idea visualization while 2 of the teammates will be in charge of producing visual sketches. I am in charge of Frame 24 and Frame 25.

After the script and visualization are done, the sketching team start to sketch each of the scenes and do a storyboard. Sketches by Tress & Athirah.

 MOOD BOARD
• Create Mood board.
• Style Frames (still, not animated) for 3 most “challenging” scenes.

As our group consists of 6 members, each of us proposes and brainstorm ideas on the motion graphic style that we preferred then votes for the best ones. This moldboard I suggested is Flat art style inspired by Malika Favre. This art style is iconic and timeless, conveying incredible depth in just a few colours

After a long discussion, everyone agrees to go with a more friendly and colourful approach. We also consider the art direction that is suitable for our target audience by sharing the pros and cons of using the particular art style. Suggestion 1 is our top choice as it was simple to stylize compared to the others. We also considered that each member might have a different level of illustration skills style 1 might be able to balance it out.  After that, each member did further research on Pinterest to collect as many references as we could in Miro.

STYLE FRAMES
Once the style is set, we the Illustrators team started to work on the style frames for the most challenging scene. Referring to the sketches, I try to design each scene in a more direct and visually attractive way by highlighting the main elements.

During the illustration process, I always refer back to the illustration my teammates did and search for online references to draw the specific elements such as condom packaging and pregnancy test kit to have a better idea on how to illustrate them.

REFINING STAGE
Once everything is set, we proceed to refine each of the illustrations and separate them into different layers so that our animators would be able to explore the best way to portray the scene.

TEAMWORK IS THE KEY!
Our leader suggested having a 'mentor-mentee' to help out other members who are not familiar with Ai or illustrates. After finishing my part, I was in charge of guiding Honoka and refining her Frames (22b and 23).

REFLECTIONS:

Experience
In essence, teamwork is about working together in the same direction to achieve common goals. Collaboration is a major part of ensuring the team works well and delivers the project outcome. I'm grateful that we have experienced team leaders who can guide us through and give us feedback on improving. All the tasks we delegated were based on our strengths and weaknesses. Due to time constraints, we might not participate in all roles and stages, but we tried our best to complete the delegated tasks. I am glad that I can help out the other members, as we have one new member (Japanese) who might be new to the environment and our working style. We gave each other emotional support and words of encouragement during all the stressful weeks. Overall, I enjoyed being in a team and loved illustrating, matching colours, and adding details to produce visually appealing and impactful graphics.

Observation
The design process is important to produce good work. Visualizing the script and producing a mood board helped us ease the project flow where each of the members will stick in the same art direction. A mood board helps build patterns, fonts, and colours that can save time managing opinions and approvals down the line. Instead of deliberating over the type of look the motion graphic should have, the mood board helps maintain the quality of the art.

Findings
Sex education aims to equip young people with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that will empower them to realize their health and well-being. It is important to raise awareness to prevent teenage pregnancies, child marriage, and both online and offline sexual violence. Through this project, we could train ourselves to creatively bring out the sensitive message to the public and become more approachable.
