LECTURES:

Mr.Anis briefed us on Project 2 which is creating a minimalist poster with decisive moment based on the story. The decisive moments can be scene in a movie that turn tided of the story or particular video game or a memorable chapter from books. As a designer, we are required to capture these moments and translate them into a single piece of animated artwork.

Notes for Project 2:
  • A pivotal moment in a widely known movie/animation/book/game etc
  • Capture the unique, meaningful moment that time, involving movement and action
  • Translating the scene with a minimalist style approach
  • Create a sophisticated background to the subject that interacts both visually and psychologically
  • Research on the narrative chosen
  • Think of how to make the characters or other iconic objects simplified and can be recognize
  • Identify the main theme colours of the movie/ story

PRACTICAL :

This week we were introduced to create basic animation using Photoshop and After effects. We learned about the principle, how to develop from sketches to create timeline. There are 12 basic principles of animation: Squash and stretch, anticipation, staging, straight ahead action and pose to pose, follow through and overlapping action, slow in and slow out, arc, secondary act, timing, exaggeration, solid drawing and appeal.

INSTRUCTIONS:

PROJECT 2: DECISIVE MOMENT

Before kick starts the project, I did some researches on minimalist movie poster design and study how they translate the movie to basic art. I noticed the key elements are usually portrayed in a way of lines, silhouettes, simple text, shadow to identify the light source. From these references, I roughly got an idea of how will I want my poster to be.

The movie I chose is Maleficent which is a dark fantasy adventure film which have an interesting plot. This film is a live-action adaptation of Walt Disney's 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty, and portrays the story from the perspective of the eponymous antagonist, depicting her conflicted relationship with the king and princess of a corrupt kingdom.

Figure 1.2 Chosen movie 'Maleficent', 6th May 2021

Maleficent is a powerful, kind hearted fairy and has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom. Until one day, everything changed when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal - an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Maleficent faces a battle with the invading king's successor and as a result, she placed a curse upon his newborn infant, Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom - and perhaps to Maleficent' s true happiness as well.

The movie scene I have chosen when Maleficent is trapped under an iron net by Stefan's guards. Aurora goes to help Maleficent one of the soldiers pushes her back. Maleficent turns Diaval into a dragon as the guards start attacking her, and he lifts the net off of her and fights the guards. However, as Stefan enters the scene, Diaval is chained by the soldiers and they surrounds Maleficent with their shields. Stefan taunts Maleficent and cruelly beats her with an iron chain, knocking her down.

After Stefan throws the chains around Maleficent and tosses her aside, Stefan takes out his sword and as he walks towards Maleficent to strike a fatal blow but, before Stefan can kill her, the wings reach Maleficent and reattach themselves to her back, after Aurora frees them. She flaps her wings and floats up. With her wings back, Maleficent starts to fly away and frees Diaval from his restraints, and together, they manage to defeat the guards.

After studying the movie scene, I began to sketch the ideas of the poster. To make the home look more realistic and recognizable, I decided to trace the original movie poster to create the silhouette.

Now I have done digitalize the overall composition of the poster, I try to think of the background for the poster. By collecting the movie scene, I decided to combine the ideas and element in the lock, and the metal chain which appears when Maleficent is attacked by the guards.

After completing the background and most of the parts, I added shadow and creates some glowing effects to make the poster looks more interesting.

Then, I move forward to study the animation of the wings to make the GIF. I screenshot different movement and position of the wings when Maleficent got her wings back.

Unfortunately it looks weird, so i try to reduce the frame and keep it just 10 frames.

After receiving feedback from Mr.Kannan, I decided to improve the visibility of the background and midground as it's lack of mystery feeling. Besides, the position of the wings needs to be higher at the shoulder level which I may have made a mistake. He also commented the title can be bigger to enhance the visual hierarchy.

FEEDBACKS:

Week 7//Ms. Anis commented is a good choice of movie where Maleficent has her iconic horns red lips. It requires more study of the movie scene to move on to idea sketches.

Week 8//Self independent learning week (continue work on the poster)

Week 9// Mr.Kannan commented the overall animation is good with the effects (Figure 2.9). Some detail can be improved such as the position of the wings needs to be higher at the shoulder level. The background and midground can make it darker to add the mystery vibes. Besides, the title can be bigger to enhance the visual hierarchy. So I improved them and the final outcome as shown (Figure 3.2).

REFLECTION:

It was an interesting yet challenging project as we were to design something that simple yet impactful visual communication. Besides, detailed studies of the movie scene we have chosen is important to convey the story behind a poster. It requires good conceptual skills to communicate a message using only the simplest of shapes. In this exercise, the study of composition, layering and applying effects and texture are the key elements that make the poster outstanding. The process of highlighting the movie poster with simple animation was even tougher. It needs to create an impact on capturing the decisive moment at the same time delivering the message to the audience.
