COMIC TRANSITIONS:
1. Moment to moment // when something moves or changes
slightly, over a very small time frame
2. Action-to-action //a figure doing an action by a sequence
of frames
Figure 1.4 Action-to-action from Sea of red & Drainage System, 3rd June 2021
3. Subject-to-subject // changes the subject, whilst staying
within the same scene or idea.
Figure 1.5 Subject-to-subject in 'Dream Life', 3rd June 2021
4. Scene-to-scene // transports the reader across significant
distances of time and space.
Figure 1.6 Scene-to-scene in 'Kingdom' by Jon Mc Naught, 3rd June
2021
5. Aspect-to-aspect// use the freeze time to establish mood,
feeling and emotion of a scene
Figure 1.7 Aspect to aspect in 'Dream Life', 3rd June 2021
6. Symbolic// Partial montages depicting the contents of a
flashback or inner dialog. Symbolic transitions deal with the
unreal, the felt, and the imagined.
7. Rolling // Transition from one ‘panel’ or idea to
the next, act as a sense of movement through space.
Breaking down the model of panel to panel comics storytelling
which creates fluidity. Having no panel gutters or borders, the
images are melded and mixed together, overlapping and interlacing.
It altered state of mind or perception, changes the impression of
time taken.
6. Non-sequitur // offers no logical relationship between
panels, random ideas but still next to each other
PRACTICAL:
Mr. Kannan taught us how to make our comic more interesting by
animating different panels in After Effects. With different
transitions and keyframes, we could highlight the plot by adjusting
the position, scale, opacity and the speed of each scene.

she walked into her classroom, her classmates look at her

stopped crying and looked around. She noticed a Koi fish

you." answer Koi. Koi started to share his experience and how he
makes friends under the water.
WEBTOON PROPOSAL//

SKETCHING PROCESS//
After I completed the entire storyline, I began to search for the comic style I prefer. Then, I started to break down the story and visualised how to bring the audience into the comic. Start with the setting of the story, with is a village. I also applied the techniques that we have learned while sketching, identifying the foreground, midground and background.Figure 1.4 Character posture and emotion study, 10th June 2021

DIGITISE PROCESS//
After finalising all the story panels, I begin to digitalise my sketches. At first, I wanted to make it vector style using warm colours as it gives happiness. However, the outcome wasn't that satisfying. The artwork of my first attempt seems to be lack personal style. So I decided to use my digital sketch as a base and refine it to make a 'sketchy style' comic that shows the raw and originality of the design.Figure 2.1 Pastel and warm colour palette, 20th June 2021

ANIMATION PROCESS//
Before began the amination process, I separated the design elements to make the masking process easier in After effects. Not sure whether this step is correct but it does helps me to have a rough idea in mind with elements to animate. The process of exploring the transition and animation for each scene is fun yet challenging. As a beginner, dealing with quite many panels just made me feel a bit stressed out. It turns out better when I revised it a few times. This entire process took a longer time than I expected.Figure 3.5 Linear wipe for transition, 5th July 2021
Figure 3.6 Fade in and out to create a 'dive under water', 5th July 2021
Upon completion of the comic animation, I searched for suitable background music to enhance the mood of the story. To make the music smoother, I combined two different fantasy soundtracks using cross fade and fade out at the end of the soundtrack.

REFLECTION
Experience
'A slice of life' theme comic as our final project was a great chance for us to explore spreading positivity through non-verbal communications. It was satisfying to see the short story I have written have developed into a webtoon. Making a comic is tougher than I imagined, especially conveying the message through detailed drawings and motions. I suffered at first to come out with a good storyline. Then I started to narrow down the idea by focusing on what message I express and always keep in mind that 'Keep it simple'. The entire process of doing the webtoon and motion comic was complicated than I thought. The entire process of creating a webtoon and motion comic was challenging than I thought, but I was pleased that I was able to cope with it.
Observation
Each comic design and style is unique as it expressed a person's ideology or passion. Through creating a comic, I developed empathy and a better understanding of one's emotions and reactions. I was amazed by how creating a comic allowed me to explore my emotional response to what I have observed in practice. Moreover, the techniques and theories we have learned in the previous lectures are useful when developing comic art.
Findings
There are a lot of techniques to learn in producing a comic. First, in character development, the body posture, gesture and facial expressions are the keys to deliver the message far more than words alone. The choice of speech bubble and word expression also play a part to highlight the emotion and give extra attention to the audience. Choosing the proper colour and tone contributes to the story's mood and as a result, makes the characters and key elements stand out.
