REFLECTION:

Experience
Phew. I survived in publishing. This module has been challenging yet fun for me. I am glad we can join the physical class. The beginning of the task is still manageable and fun, especially the exercises of making book mock-ups. The tasks become more challenging when it comes to writing a story and designing the layout and illustrations. For illustrations, the hardest part is getting the right art direction to tie the story together. Besides, to create something aesthetic but abstract at the same time enough to give the reader space to imagine. The layout is the most challenging part for me. I got a little discouraged as I could not understand the concept even after several attempts and explanations from the lecturer. Although I read and watched the lecturer's videos, I do not know where to start when it comes to my project. I made many mistakes throughout, and I genuinely appreciate Mr. Vinod's constructive feedback to help us improve our work. Through these 14 weeks, I observed myself it's a 'slow learner'. However, I always remind myself to take things slowly and don't compare myself to others as we all have different working styles. It might take a longer time for me to understand the concept and theory. So, I had to work harder to make more attempts to make it right and get the desired outcome. Self-reminder: "It's okay to go slow as long as you don't stop". 

Observation
It’s fantastic to listen to some real-life experiences from Mr.Vinod, which makes me feel excited about the working industry. However, I realized my standards might not reach that level yet. Mr.Vinod always encourages us to read, be aware of the current industry and get involved in the external competition. I agree with Mr.Vinod’s perspective that design needs constant practice, improvement, experimentation and learning. It is not just about assignments. I am glad I managed to participate in one of the logo competitions. It helped me to get more exposure and utilise my time in doing some design experiments. “Work fast, work smart,” is what Mr Vinod told us before, and it reminded me we must be more independent in learning and thinking to improve the quality work of our work.

Findings
This module helped me better understand the importance of layout design. It helps convey clear messages through eye-catching visuals, whether online or offline. A good layout design must have a good flow, a clear message and be exciting to look at. The key word I have learnt is to create ‘variations’, whether a storybook, website, digital pdf or branding designs. They all require variations to add value and guide the reader through a piece of content without overshadowing its message. The play of graphic elements plays a vital role in achieving a smooth message flow to maximize the performance. Overall, it has been an interesting journey and I learned a lot from this module, special thanks to Mr. Vinod!
