PUBLISHING DESIGN//TASK 3A

LECTURE:
INSTRUCTIONS:
Task 3A//Book
After developing content (text and visuals) the next stage
is to determine the format (size and binding method), and
an appropriate & attractive layout based on a suitable
grid system, choice of font/s and use of colour.
1. Due to time constraints the binding method shall be
predetermined to be staple binding (saddle binding). The
book is 32 pages, which is smaller than A4 and bigger than
A5. However, if we wish to try a different binding method,
we can propose it to the lecturer.
2. Adapt a suitable grid system, choose a fitting font and
create an attractive layout in InDesign.
3. The choice of colour must compliment our visuals and
play a role that is supportive but also creates dynamism
where needed. It is advised to limit the use of colour, as
it could be distracting.
4. Determining paper type, for cover as well as inside
pages.

Grid SystemAfter looking at different references, I started to come out with my grid system. For the first 3 options, I played with 4 column grid, and 3 column grid and tried different placements of heading, body text, pull quote and subtext.

As I have 5000+ words for my story, Mr.Vinod suggested reducing the margin to let more text flow in the spread. Below is the final improvised grid.Figure 2.5 Final Grid.jpg, 27th April 2022

Cover Design ProgressCover design reminder: 2mm wider than content page, add barcode with white bachground. The first design of my book cover, I tried two versions white and black. I included clouds and some element that brings the mood of the story. After receiving feedback from Mr Vinod, I tried to keep it simple by removing the clouds, changing the title to all caps and try different colour option for the arc.Figure 5.2 Cover design #2 black, 31st May 2022

Figure 8.23 Final Speads.pdf, 1st June 2022Printing Process I went Archprint to print my book, I requested for test print to double-check the layout, visuals before the actual. Test print saddle stitch booklet on Ivory 160gsm. The first test print the printing shop mistakenly put the wrong setting and the page number are messed up. Luckily, I brought the original file in spread with me to show them what it supposed to be. They were quite friendly and helped me to test print another set. (But wasted so much paper ouch!)Second text print they printed on A4 as well. This time the orientation was correct, but the saddle stitch binding did not do properly. This causes some of the double spread or images that invole two pages did not show up properly. I raised this issue to the shopper and they said this is just draft, so I reminded the shopper to bind properly for the actual.Figure 9.2 Second test print binding problem, 31st May 2022
Figure 9.3 Image did not appear nicely, 31st May 2022
For cover, I noticed the normal ivory paper will have a crack effect after it is folded. I asked for their opinion to avoid this cause it doesn't look nice in my book. The shopper suggested me to do a matte lamination for the cover and showed me a sample brochure. It's slightly more expensive than the normal colour printing, but I decided to go with it.Figure 9.5 Cover 'white line' after folding, 31st May 2022Final Printed BookTADAA! FEEDBACK:
Week 5
General Feedback: For long reading, avoid
choosing fonts that have high contrast
(bodoni). Next week complete and update all
exercises, including my own grid system and
story + apply typography.
Specific Feedback: Text needs to make sure it
flows starting and ending the same grid
system. Type specimen sheet, don't put visual
first focus on the type.
Week 7
General Feedback: Design book for inside book, cover is
designed separately (cover is always
bigger). You must know what font you used
before presenting
Specific Feedback: Large amount of text, make the margin
space for text larger. 5000 words doesn't
seem to work on 2 column text. Reduce
margin to allow more text in per
spread.
Week 8
Independent Learning
Week
Week 9
General Feedback: Print in B&W to see what the book
looks like, typesetting, pages. Paper
70gsm- 80gsm, Thicker cover design 2mm
wider.
Specific Feedback: #1: Introduce double spread to give
break. Overall still okay, too much of
text. #2: Pg 18,27,19 text is not sitting on
the assigned column. Pull quote needs to
be differenced further, looks almost looks
like your subtext - the bar doesn’t help
matters. The cover is good minus the clouds.
Might want to introduce some colour of
slight differences in the arc window for
the back cover. The inside cover can be just
the red colour used in the book. Title for
cover can try all capitals. #3: Capital letters have a better presence.
White arch’s better. Try using slightly
off-white paper for the inside pages.
Publishers should not be put in the same
level as the author. Also its better to
put an indication who illustrator and
author. If the title is already near the
author, don’t need to indicate that it is
in the author.
Week 10
General Feedback: Navigation bar is important to navigate the
reader, screen reading need to have larger
text (16-17pt body text), wider leading and
gutter spaces. Watch video and test out
ability to do the interactive pdf. Duplicate
another file to try out the links,
rollover.
Specific Feedback: Grid No.2 looks okay, and the navigation
bar should be outside the margin space—body
text to have more gutter space and leading.
May want to add left and right page buttons,
content page and homepage in the navigation
bar. Can proceed to do first chapter.
Week 12 (Marking)Excellent work. Keep it up.

REFLECTIONS:
Experiences
This task was challenging for me, and
although I tried to apply what I understood
from Mr Vinod's lecturer, it seemed to be a
different story when I did it myself. I
struggled to position many texts and create
a nice layout even after listing the
explanation and demonstration. I feel like
what to give up at times, but I keep telling
myself to keep trying to make the best out
of it. I appreciate constructive feedback
from Mr Vinod and his words of
encouragement. It helps to understand the
mistakes I made and try my best to fix them.
Publishing is not easy at all. It requires
patience, attention to detail, and a
positive mindset to try and error. Respect
to all publication designers!
Observation
Consistency and variation in layout play an
essential role in making the book stand out.
Book covers are important as they give the
book's first impression to the audience. It
may affect how people think about the
content and draw their interest to read the
book. I noticed having white space in the
layout allows the reader to take a breath
and digest the story. After finalizing the
layout, it is necessary to look for areas
that need kerning or add hyphenation. The
pullquote has to be treated differently to
stand out more.
Findings
I realized we should not be afraid to make
mistakes but learn from them. We should also
pay attention to the others' work and
comments to understand the 'theory' in
different cases. Being a slow learner, I
need to put more time and effort into
producing something correct or at least
eye-pleasing. Although it took quite some
time to test print, I enjoyed the printing
process. Although some continuous pages
don't look good after binding them, looking
at my design physically is just so
satisfiying.
