plan the guidebook.
PROJECT 3: FINAL PROJECT
Now we have the data and sources we needed, it's time to
plan the guidebook.

#1 THE CONCEPT
The concept of our project is integration between
Wes Anderson and the landmarks of Kuala Lumpur.
Thus, an Anderson-Esque Kuala Lumpur. Our project
would be executed in the form of a guidebook but “it
is not just any guidebook”. This idea was born from
combining 3 of our preliminary ideas into one
(guidebook, postcards and mini-game.
#2 THE DESIGN PROCESS
As I'll be in charge of illustrating a Kuala Lumpur x Wes
Anderson map. I start off by tracing the buildings from
the site photos taken. This process requires a lot of
patience to identify the iconic pattern and simply them
into a clean line illustration.

#3 REDESIGNING THE GUIDEBOOK COVER
The previous guidebook cover designs are pretty good
(done by sewin), however, we were thinking to explore
more designs that are able to feature more landmarks
to fit the title.
After discussing and voting, we decide the change a
more eye-catching title which is "An Anderson-Esque
Kuala Lumpur" as our guidebook main title. Description:
A guidebook on exploring historical architectures in KL
through Wes Anderson's eyes.

Figure 3.1 Redesign Cover #1, 11th Jan 2022
The first design was quite boring and I decided to
make the cover design continuos to the back cover by
enlarging some of the building illustrations. The
guidebook cover design showcases some of the KL
landmarks. Starting from the front cover on the top
right, we have Loke Chow Kit mansion and Carcossa
Seri Negara on the top of the back cover page. On
the bottom row, moving from right to left, we have
Coliseum Theatre, Restoran Bunn Choon, Malaysian
Industrial Court, Central Market, and Old OCBC
building. The use of symmetry is utilized heavily on
these 2 pages.

#4 MAP DESIGN
To provide a fun guide for tourists to explore the
landmarks of Kuala Lumpur. From the experience during
the site visits, the landmarks are arranged in a way
that is energy-saving and cost-effective for the
traveler as they are conveniently accessible.
Highlighting the location's name with a ribbon is able
to deliver a viewer's attention more. However the colour
ribbons might seem overwhelming. Therefore, I decided to
keep them the same colour and differentiate them by the
locations numbering icon.

#5 REVAMP
The cover and map designs are good to go, however, the
color used may not reflect Wes Anderson's style as close
as we could. Our teammates, Dorcas and Ellis work on a
new color palette and mood inspired by the movie scenes
in The Grand Budapest Hotel.

THE FINAL DESIGN
After trying few versions and all members
prefer to go with the pastel pink version that
gives a dreamlike feeling and best reflects Wes
Anderson's style.

#6 RETOUCH PHOTO EDITING
Helping out team members who struggle to come out
with a set of filters that reflect Wes Anderson's
style.
I suggested we could refer and study the movie scene
or image to adjust the settings accordingly. Watching
several Youtube tutorials does help too.

#7 THE VIDEO
Figure 7.0 Photo editing draft (by Janice), 15th Jan
2022
The idea of "The Secret Explorer" was suggested
and drafted by Dorcas. It reflects more Wes
Anderson's style by choosing the right music as
well. As she will need to further refine the
guidebook layouts, I then continue the editing
task by putting in the latest edited photos and
making sure the style is consistent.

REFLECTION:In a blink of an eye, this semester has almost come to an end. It has been a stressful week to meet deadlines, and a lot of research needs to be done. I truly appreciated the support contribution of each member to make this project successful. As we are also busy with the other modules, self-discipline becomes one of the most crucial for us to manage our time wisely and keep up with the quality of work. Besides, this module enables us to explore within our interest of culture and initiate something that we are passionate about. The hybrid session allows our group to have a flexible discussion and take our time to complete the task. During this semester, we did not have as many feedback sessions as the previous semesters. It trained us to practice our critical thinking skills to analyze our work. It was a satisfying journey to learn about Wes Anderson's style and see how our ideas came into reality.
