INSTRUCTIONS:

PROJECT 2: DATA COLLECTION
For data collection, we decided to do 3 methods including movie analysis, site visit and interview to collect the information and sources that we need for our project execution in stage 3.

To save time, we separated into different subgroups to plan and carry out the data collection.

METHOD 1: FILM STUDY
There are 2 films that we have chosen, first the Grand Budapest Hotel which won four Oscars awards and is known as the Best Movie from Wes Anderson. Second, The Royal Tenenbaums is known as the top 25th funniest comedies on Netflix.

For this part, I will be charging to analyse The Grand Budapest Hotel. This movie depicts the adventures of M. Gustave (Ralph Fiennes), a fabulous concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. (Imdb,2014). The Grand Budapest Hotel is a film full of hues and tones, friendship and love, leisure and conflict. Aesthetic appreciation and greed, elegance and crudity, generosity and cruelty, sorrow and hope are all featured in the film.

While watching the movie, I observed the try to movie's architecture detail (scene design), colour, aspect ratio, and framing.

In The Grand Budapest Hotel, the majority of the film is presented in Academy ratio, 1.375:1. The name derives from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which set that ratio as the standard for studio films in 1932. There are a few sequences in ’60s are presented in an Anamorphic widescreen ratio, 2.35:1 and the normal widescreen format 1.85.1 are used in the 80s. (Haglund, D.& Harris, A., 2014)

The framing throughout the movie is consistent and very unique to Wes Anderson. Symmetrical compositions and shots are notable features in the Grand Budapest Hotel to reflect the perspective of a specific character in a film. Anderson enjoys using straight-on views and usage of a wide-angle lens. Some of the scenes are presented using low and high-angle shots captured with a wide-angle lens.

I was impressed how Wes Anderson uses chandeliers and other lighting fixtures to define the scene's focal point. Every detail is in sync with the chandelier or pendant, whether to the right or left. Wes Anderson aspires to create an angle that exudes simplicity and intoxication. At the same time, the movie maintains balanced geometry which makes it visually appealing.

The two time frames (60’s and 30’s) are presented differently in the movie and the production design choices differ as well. For the 30’s, the scenes are presented in more red and pink color cast and a bit harsher light. For the 60’s, the images are presented in a warmer and tinted towards yellows and oranges.A red-lacquer elevator is a perfect backdrop for rich purple-velvet uniforms with coordinating trim.

METHOD 2: SITE VISITS
The site visits team (Dorcas, Lavender and Amber) researched various locations and narrowed it down to the top 9 locations based on the criteria that the locations should have rich historical backgrounds, locations under the risk of abolishment, not maintained well, or have Wes Anderson's aesthetic to a certain extent.

ON THE DAY
To avoid the jam on Friday, we plan our one day trip early in the morning 5am. We gathered at LFS Pawagam Coliseum as it was the most convenient starting point. It is near to a LRT station and there is a parking spot a few minutes away.

Roles: Take site photos explore Wes Anderson's angles, capture behind the scene pictures and some video footage.extent.

METHOD 3: INTERVIEW
For an interview, we helped out Ellis and Lavender to set the list of questions to be asked. There were 2 separate questions: more professional questions for cinematography experts, one is for young adults who love to travel.

At first, we planned to have a face to face interview session; however, after approaching the possible interviewees, they preferred to take their time to answer the questions in words. Therefore, we change the method to an email interview. The interviews were separated in two parts of questions, both related to our research problem and helped us to answer the research questions:

FEEDBACKS:
Week 4-5: Film analysis movie choice "Fantastic Mr.Fox" may need to reconsider, choosing the film which is more retable to the research problem. Site visits are good way to study architecture in Kuala Lumpur so that we can use it for our guidebook. For interviews, we can have 2 different sets of question. First , to interview cinematography experts, for example university lecturers that are within our reach. Second, to interview young adults who loves to travel or do not like travel at all.

REFLECTION:
It was an enjoyable experience, especially during the site visit. It was my first time spending the whole day walking around the city centre of Kuala Lumpur. Walking on the street with these bunch of people and taking photographs were awesome. Unfortunately one of our members could not join us because she had a booster appointment. Although the weather the sun is scorching hot and all of us are tired and sweaty, we enjoyed the process of taking pictures, exploring different angles, and doing a 'marching' video to capture Malaysia landmarks in Wes Anderson style. We take each other back to ensure we get enough sources for our project execution.
