LECTURES :
WEEK 1// What is rationale?
Oxford dictionary
Rationale : the principles or reasons which
explain a particular decision, course of action,
belief, etc.
The rationale of your research is the reason for
conducting the study. The rationale should
answer the need for conducting the said
research. It is a very important part of your
publication as it justifies the significance and
novelty of the study. That is why it is also
referred to as the justification of the study.
Ideally, your research should be structured as
observation, rationale, hypothesis, objectives,
methods, results and conclusions.
WEEK 2//Problem statement
• A problem statement is a concise description
of an issue to be addressed or a condition to
be improved upon.
• It identifies the gap between the current
(problem) state and desired (goal) state of a
process or product.
• A problem statement paves the way for the
reader to understand the research problem.
Area to focus, Find way to answer the problem
What is the format (parts of a problem
statement)?
A persuasive problem statement consists of
three parts:
1) the ideal, 2) the reality, and 3) the
consequences.
1. Part A the ideal: Describes a desired goal
or ideal situation; explains how things should
be.
2. Part B the reality: Describes a condition
that prevents the goal, state, or value in
Part A from being achieved or realized at this
time; explains how the current situation falls
short of the goal or ideal.
3. Part C the consequences: Identifies the way
you propose to improve the current situation
and move it closer to the goal or ideal.
WEEK 3// Research
question,
Research
objective
Research:
An organized and
systematic study of a
problem where the
researcher attempts to
address or find
solution to the
problem. In order to
properly address the
problem, specific
questions and clearly
defined objectives are
important.
Research
Question:
An answerable inquiry
into a specific
concern or issue. An
initial step in a
research project,
derived from the
problem statement or
research objectives.
It influences the
strategy that is
employed in order to
either provide answers
to the questions or
verify hypotheses.
Research
Objective:
What a researcher
expects to accomplish
by the end of a
research project.
•Derived from problem
statement or research
questions.
•Without objectives, a
researcher is aimless
and directionless in
conducting the
study.(Clear, concise
and declarative
statement.
•Focused on ways to
measure the
variables, e.g.
identify or
describe, etc.
•A good objective is
S.M.A.R.T.
•S -Specific
•M -Measurable
•A -Attainable
•R -Realistic
•T -Time bound
•Should also be
relevant, feasible,
unambiguous.

FEEDBACKS:
Week 2
General Feedback: Research question avoid using do/does.
Specific Feedback:
-Research topic can be wider aspects to give space for discussion.
-Instead of 'shape and color of logo design', can be visual elements/ logo placement in primary/secondary packaging.
-Research problem wrote is more to a hypothesis, try changing the word 'influences'
-Some research information in rationale can be use in problem statement later on.
-Improve rationale by focusing why we decided to carry out this research.
Week 3
Specific Feedback:
- Rationale: add why you like fast food
- For research problems, it's better to be "the role and impact"
- Correct cite format, only need to put sir name
- Start researching images or ads of different kinds of products (variety of food include beverage, burgers etc.)
- "Visual elements" can change to "Graphic component", be consistent in the use of keywords
- Overall good. Focus on the graphic component of product advertisement, not the brand strategy.
-Add picture credits
