LECTURES :

Week 3// Storytelling in Film

Narrative
Chain of events in cause-effect relationship occurring in the time and space
Event: A man tosses and turns/unable to sleep/ A mirror breaks/ A telephone rings

A man has a fight with his boss;
● he tosses and turns that night, unable to sleep.
● In the morning, he is still so angry that he smashes the mirror while shaving.
● His phone rings, his boss has called to apologize.

What-Who-When-How-Why-Where
We make sense of narrative by identifying its events and linking them by causality (cause and effect), time and space.

Story & Plot

Story = Explicitly Presented Events + Presumed/Inferred Events
Plot = Explicitly Presented Events + Added Non-diegetic (narrative) Material
From an audience standpoint, all we have before us is the plot – the arrangement
of material in the film as it stands. We create the story in our minds on the basis of cues in the plot.

Story
The set of all the events in a narrative, both the ones explicitly presented and those the viewer infers, constitutes the story. (Who & Why)

Plot
Everything visibly and audibly present in the film, and material that is extraneous
to the story world.(What happened? How that happened? When & Where?)

Plot segmentation should be:
  •  Major changes within the narrative e.g. changes in action, time & space
  •  Short and succinct with key points only
  • A synopsis of the film
  • Lengthy description

Week 5// Storyboard

Storyboarding=Visualization
When the scene has a complicated action involved or few perspective point of view, storyboard is the most effective way to map out the scene.

Figure 2.1 Psycho-Shower scene storyboard, 22nd Sept 2021

1. Invented by Disney in 1930
2. Functionality:  converting a script into a depicts the action visually
3. Apply in film: Provides a layout of events as seen through the eyes of the camera
4. Well accepted: Contemporary storyboards are used in wide variety of multimedia projects

Purpose of Storyboard
  • Show IMPORTANT ACTION
  • Continuity/Editing point
  • Shot Composition
  • Indicate Camera Angle/ movement
  • Map out the scene
*Floor plan for camera shot

Figure 2.2 Camera position in floor plan, 22nd Sept 2021

*Cutaway shot: to enhance the story telling & create mood

Figure 2.3 Cutaway shot, 22nd Sept 2021

*Composition: Staging subject among foreground, midground and background to create contrast in size, textural diffusion, tonal and color separation, up/down position, and overlap.

Animatic
Series of images played in sequence, often with a soundtrack. In essence, it's an animated storyboard.
Timing of every shot + rhythm of the scene + audio & music added

Project 2: Shooting Practice & Editing

Zach King, a filmmaker, illusionist based in Los Angeles who is well known for his “magic style”: a visual effect with a magic twist at the end. The effects are as visually interesting and it gained over 75 million followers across social media platforms. However, Zach King is more concerned of keeping his audience entertained then the follower count.

3 Favorite Zach King Videos

Figure 1.0 How to get a Diamond Play Button Fast (source), 26th Aug 2021

The storyline is pretty interesting and the colour adjustment gives a mysterious feeling. The effect of making the diamond 'shine' is awesome. With suitable sound effects, it brings me to the story and wonders what will happen next. I like how the story ended with cool editing skills (escaping from the laptop screen) makes the video surreal and fun.

Figure 1.1 'Low battery is worst' (source), 26th Aug 2021

The concept of the clip is fantastic. The effect of pausing the video acts as a cool trick as viewers thought their phone only remain 5% of battery. The transition is smooth especially turning the paper to a phone wire to charge the phone.

Figure 1.2 'Always eat your vegetables' (source), 26th Aug 2021

It's a simple and short clip but the seamless transition from vegetable on plate to a cake it's pretty cool. The video include deeply satisfying loop, making me to watch again and again.

Class Exercise: Burrow Plot Segmentation -----------------------------------------------------
For class exercise, we were required to watch Burrow short film and write down the plot segmentation in short sentences.

FEEDBACK:

Week 5 The shot size and effect shot is overall good (Figure 2.0). The front part lack of motivation to the hand sanitizer, may change the story to (sneeze/ eating) a plot that trigger the character to need a hand sanitizer.

Week 6 The storyline need to enhance to make the flow more smooth and relatable. Can add a character (parcel man) to deliver parcel to J. (Figure 2.2)

Week 7 The shot is overall smooth, good camera angles, the sound effect and background music suit the video.

REFLECTION:

This task was a challenging one as we had to start everything from scratch. The process of creating a storyline and develop a storyboard required a lot of hard work and creativity. At the same time, we played multiple roles in this task,  to become the director to visualize how the end product will be like, the cameraman to test out the shots and angle.  I realized how vital a storyboard is as it helps us execute better during the shoot and makes the whole process smoother. Besides, acting is one of the challenging parts for me as I took many shots to capture the right emotion for each scene. I hope to explore further and enhance my After Effect skills to improve the editing skill on ‘magic tricks.’
