LECTURES :
Sound Elements//
1. Speech: most important tool for understanding the story of
the film.
Dialogue = Conversation between characters in the movie.
Voice over=The voice of an unseen narrator speaking.
2. Sound effects
Ambiance: to the background noise present at a given scene or a
location.
Hard or "cut" effects almost every sound we hear at the movies is a
sound effect.
Exp: Train sliding door open and close, footsteps, train moving on
tracks, the ambiance in train etc.
3. Music
in the movie is to enhance the dramatic narrative and the emotional impact.
*Dubbing: also known as automated Dialog Replacement (ADR), is
the process of re-recording dialogue after the filming process to
improve audio quality or reflect dialogue changes
*Foley: A sound effects technique for synchronous effects or
live effects. The Foley technique are named after Jack Foley, a sound
editor at Universal Studios
Week 11// Audio Shaping
1. Frequency range: Hertz(Hz)
Human hearing frequency range from 20Hz-20,000Hz
2. Dynamic range: Decibels (dB)
The threshold of human hearing is measured as 0dB SPL (sound pressure level) and threshold of pain 130dB SPL

Examples:
-Phone call sound effects: bring down BASS, TREBLE, raise MID RANGE between 500 Hz to 2kHz

INSTRUCTIONS:
Project 1: Audio Editing Exercises
Week 4// This week we were given task to do audio dubbing for Disney
PIXAR film "Soul". Soul follows a middle school music teacher named Joe
Gardner, who seeks to reunite his soul and his body after they are
accidentally separated, just before his big break as a jazz musician.
For this task, only speech and sound effect needed, no music required.
Exercise 1: Audio Dubbing
To start of with the exercise, I watch the muted clip for several times
to try out with the script. I find it quite challenging since certain
parts were faster. After recording a few attempts, I decided to search
for original clip for reference to improve some of the tone and speed.
After recording my voice, I observe list down the sound effect needed
for the clip. It was quite challenging to search for suitable sound
effect to match the story scene. The websites recommended by Mr. Martin
quite useful in this case. The overall task was fun and exciting.

For this task, we are required to apply the effects below to the
given audio using Adobe Audition.
- Voice of phone call.
- Voice coming from inside of closet.
- Voice of big stadium.
- Voice of toilet/bathroom.
- Underground cave.

1. Magnification EXPLOSION sound
2. Variation of PUNCH SOUNDS (Triple punches)
3. MONSTER of ALIEN voice (select one part from sample voice)
REFLECTIONS:
Fun exercises to explore and create different sound effects in Adobe Audition! Appreciate sound designers out there who put their effort to discover different possibilities to come out with perfect sound effects for movies or animation.
