Cinematography
• Motion picture/film /video made up of many shots

• Shot : continuities view shot by one camera without interruption
• Sequence : series of scenes, or shots complete itself
• Scene: define the place or setting where the action is laid, may consist series of shots

Figure 1.4 Camera shot chart,1st Sept 2021

Figure 1.5 Camera level and shot size,1st Sept 2021

Shot size

1. Extreme wide shot (E.W.S): show broad view of surrounding around the character & convey          scale, distance and geographical location.

2. Wide shot (W.S): includes entire subject + important objects in surrounding. *if it's used at the beginning, it's known as "establishing shot

3. Medium shot (M.S): shows subject that are important to understand Gesture & Expression70 % of movie is medium shots

4. Medium close up shot (M.C.U): between waist to shoulder

5. Medium wide shot (M.W.S): cut off across the legs above or below the knees. (able to show physical setting, nice balance of figure and surrounding.

6. Over the shoulder shot (O.S): Shows the subject from behind the shoulder of another person(see what the character looking at)

7. Close-up shot(C.U): isolate the most important part of subject.  (head/ small object)

8. Extreme close-up shot (E.C.U): magnifies a detail (increase drama impact on a situation / allow the viewer to see necessary information clearly)

Camera Angle //

1. Rule of Thirds

Rule of thirds: divides frame into thirds both horizontally & vertically. The intersection points are aesthetically pleasing spots to place subjects or to have perspective lines converge

Figure 1.7 Rule of thirds,1st Sept 2021

2. Subject Angle//Composition
  • Face modelling is best 45 degree (front side of the face is properly lighted
  • Angle the camera so that parallel
  • Low angle/high level/eye level
3. Subject Height
  • High angle Smaller, younger, weak, confused,
  • Low angle: can make a character look bigger, stronger
  • Eye angle: level of observer
Screen Direction

1. Dynamic Screen direction : constant screen travel depicts subject motion in one direction only. Ex; walking, a car driving

2. Static Screen Direction: The girl will be on the left of the screen

Week 2
EXERCISE 3: Framing & Shooting -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
For this exercise, we are assigned to explore 8 types of framing and shot. It was fun and tough to think about the flow set camera angle ourselves. After drafting on a paper, I started to shoot indoor. However, the lighting and quality of the footage weren't that satisfying. So I decided to take them outdoor. This result is much better because of the natural lighting. I also utilize nature props (the flower and leaves) as my foreground.

EXERCISE 4: Lalin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After watching My name is "LALIN", we are required cut and combine footage provided using "I" for in point and "O" for out point. To make the video smoother, I added few transition between 2 clips and added fade out in black in the ending.

Week 3
Exercise: Dance Shooting Practice
I enjoyed the process of filming "Last night" dance with different angles although I am not good at dancing. This exercise took a longer time than I expected especially many NGs for the dancing part. Besides, the challenging part is to set up the camera angles with limited space. I went through a lot of rehearsals and shots to get the best quality clip for the video. This exercise is quite distressing as we dance along to the music. Hope you enjoy the video!

FEEDBACK:

Week 3
Good comparison and framing (Figure 2.2). Frontal medium close-up headroom can be lesser, frontal medium shot, close up (eyes) will be more likely to be extreme close-up shot.

REFLECTION:

It was my first time exploring Premiere Pro software. The tutorial class from Mr. Martin is really helpful and fun. Exercise 1 was pretty straightforward. However, it was a little challenging for exercise 2 as we were required to rearrange the clips in the correct order. It was tricky when some clips only show a few seconds and minimal sound effects. To avoid confusion, I jotted down the key motion and dialog for each clip. Step-by-step, I managed to 're-join' all the clips and watch them a few times to ensure the clip run smoothly.
